This section collects contents and insights related to the Novara circumnavigation. It is possible to consult the original accounts of the circumnavigation and the scientific publications made after the conclusion of the voyage, or browse through the magazine articles that provided the European public with information on the expedition. The photogallery also provides access to detailed and interactive descriptions of the naturalistic findings brought on board by the scientists as a result of their field research, and partially still available at the Museum of Natural History in Trieste.

Scientific collections

The following section presents a gallery of naturalistic specimens, mainly ornithological, from the collections brought back to Europe by the Novara and owned by the Civic Museum of Natural History in Trieste, to which a small part, compared to the total quantity, was transferred and where it is still kept today. For each specimen are provided: photographic reproduction; descriptive notice containing: common name in English and Italian, current scientific name, name given by the Austrian scientists; description and details on the collection taken from the zoological volume of the Reise and cross-reference to the latter’s corresponding page and to other zoological sources; bibliographical references; museum data, with place and date of collection; link to Avibase page for further details. In some limited cases, which are noted, the museum attribution of the specimen to the Austrian expedition is not matched by a descriptive text in the Reise volume, which makes the attribution not entirely certain. For a number of specimen an interactive photographic reproduction is provided based on the “3D Gaussian splatting” technique, which allows the image to be rotated in three-dimensional mode using a mouse (left button: three-dimensional rotation, right button: two-dimensional movement, wheel: zoom).
